Africa-Press – Mozambique. The education authorities in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado have announced that those pupils displaced because of terrorist attacks in some districts are exempt from paying school enrolment in the current academic year, which starts as of 27th February.
According to Rachid Sualé, spokesperson of the Provincial Education Directorate in Cabo Delgado, the conditions are already in place to welcome displaced students in various parts of the province.
”We know that these children are displaced because of terrorism. They left everything behind and they have no conditions to pay for the school enrollment. We must not complicate their education access, they must attend school for free”, he said.
The authorities had announced that 106 schools, at both primary and secondary level, may remain closed in the current academic year because of terrorist attacks in some districts.
Cabo Delgado had planned to hire more than 1,000 teachers, but the country’s economic situation meant that only 212 teachers could be hired. The Province has registered, up to 2 February, 112,042 new students, out of a total of 139,849 expected. Of the registered children, 69,138 are girls.
