Mozambique Defence Council Urges Strong FDS Crime Response

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s National Defence and Security Council (CNDS) has called on the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) to combat crime vigorously throughout the country with a view to restoring public security and tranquillity.

In a statement, the CNDS, which is a consultative body headed by Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief of the FDS, expressed its concern at the resurgence of crime, calling on the security forces to carry out “more vigorous measures, including increased patrolling and the redeployment of forces in line with current challenges.”

“The country needs to strengthen measures to control weapons in the possession of the State and intensify efforts to recover weapons that are still in the hands of unauthorized persons. The Council appreciates the firearms collection campaign, an initiative led by the Interior Ministry, which ran from 1 September to 15 December 2025, aimed at regularizing and collecting illegal weapons”, reads the statement.

According to the document, during the firearms collection campaign, the authorities managed to collect over 160 weapons.

The CNDS analysed the security situation in the northern province of Cabo Delgado and “congratulated the FDS for their work, which has resulted in a gradual improvement in the region’s tranquillity and a reduction in terrorist incursions in Cabo Delgado.”

The body also condemned violence against local state officials and community leaders, associated with disinformation about the spread of cholera and other diseases. There have also been repeated attacks against health units, mostly in the Northern provinces, because of rumours that health professionals are spreading cholera, rather than curing it.

In order to reduce disinformation about the disease, the CNDS called on the authorities at all levels to raise community awareness about cholera, involving educational institutions, community radio stations, religious denominations and local leaders.

The CNDS also decided to promote FDS officers to management and command positions, as part of the ongoing reforms, “with a view to making operational missions more dynamic and strengthening public security.”
