Africa-Press – Mozambique. The flow of tourists in Mozambique increased to 1.27 million in 2025, a rise of almost 15% in a single year, announced the Minister of Economy, Basílio Muhate.

According to Minister Muhate, cited in a statement issued by his ministry, this “indicator reflects the sector’s consistent recovery and growing robustness.” Mozambique had recorded 1.09 million tourists in 2024.

This growth in tourist numbers occurred in a year still heavily marked, from January to March 2025, by post-election protests that began in October 2024 and caused more than 400 deaths and widespread destruction.

The Mozambican government launched, on Friday in Vilankulo, Inhambane province, the second edition of the Mozambique Tourism Summit 2026, scheduled for 5 and 6 November. The event aims to consolidate the area as the national capital of tourism and promote strategic partnerships for the “international projection of the Mozambique brand.”

Lusa reported this month that the number of foreign tourists staying in hotels in Mozambique more than tripled in five years, reaching nearly 760,000 in 2024, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

According to the INE’s 2024 statistical yearbook, recently completed, foreign guests in the country’s hotels and other accommodation rose from 216,297 in 2020 to 757,458 in 2024, a period that included legal changes exempting tourists from 29 countries from visas.

Southern Inhambane province, considered the country’s most touristic area, received a total of 170,292 foreign tourists in 2024. However, this movement was concentrated in the capital area, with 220,500 foreigners staying in hotels in Maputo province, and a further 179,587 in Maputo City.

Meanwhile, the number of Mozambican hotel guests fell by 18%, from 1,336,088 in 2020 to 1,097,864 in 2024.

In an effort to facilitate travel and boost tourism, the Mozambican government has introduced a new online portal for tourism visa registration.

The government launched this portal this month, after having suspended the mandatory pre-registration in May 2025 due to technical problems in the system.

“Through this platform, everyone wishing to visit Mozambique can now do so, submitting a prior application to obtain authorisation to travel to Mozambique and securing the online visa,” announced the Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation, Américo Muchanga, cited by Lusa.
