Africa-Press – Mozambique. Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) received last week, in Maputo, certification of the Environmental Management System of the Maputo Thermal Power Plant (CTM), in compliance with the ISO 14001 standard.
The standard establishes rigorous requirements for implementing a robust Environmental Management System, aimed at reducing environmental impacts, preventing pollution, using resources efficiently, and controlling risks associated with company activities.
A statement from EDM notes that the certification seal was awarded by the Portuguese Certification Association (APCER).
On the occasion, EDM’s Chairman of the Board, Joaquim Ou-Chim, stated that the certification demonstrates the company’s strategic vision in a highly competitive context, where holding certifications such as ISO 14001 provides reputation and advantage for accessing international financing, which increasingly demands strict environmental compliance.
“The development of the energy sector carries an increased responsibility to protect the environment and promote harmonious coexistence with communities. For this reason, we design and implement our projects with rigorous assessment of environmental and social impacts, ensuring the protection of natural resources and electrical infrastructure,” highlighted EDM’s Chairman.
According to the statement, EDM strategically began implementing the ISO 14001 standard across its Production Units, with the Maputo Thermal Power Plant being the first to achieve this certification.
The company plans to extend the same certification to other areas of its operations.
“Our next challenge is certifying the Chicamba Hydroelectric Plant, a step that will require strict adherence to international practices and standards, as obtaining environmental certification is a complex and demanding process,” emphasised Ou-Chim.
For his part, APCER representative Haider Pestamgy noted that the Maputo Thermal Power Plant certification reflects EDM’s strategic commitment to the continuous improvement of its operations.
“During the audits, APCER observed EDM’s dedication to adopting good environmental practices, effectively monitoring its processes, and integrating sustainability into daily management,” stated the APCER representative.
It should be noted that adopting environmental certifications contributes to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
