Lázaro Henriques Lopes Menete, former Chief of the General Staff of the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces (FADM), has died, succumbing to illness on Thursday. The Ministry of Defence paid tribute to his patriotism, dedication, and pivotal role in the development and consolidation of Mozambique’s armed forces.

In a note of condolence posted on social media, the Ministry highlighted Menete’s strong sense of mission and his invaluable contributions to the FADM.

“At this moment of grief and sorrow, I extend, on my own behalf and on behalf of the Ministry of National Defence, our deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and all members of the Mozambican Defence Armed Forces, who today bid farewell to a distinguished general officer who dedicated much of his life to serving the nation, defending national sovereignty, and strengthening our military institutions,” the statement read.

Menete, who held the rank of Army General, is remembered as a key figure in the history of the FADM, with a career that left a lasting imprint on the country’s military development and institutional consolidation.
