Africa-Press – Mozambique. Farida Algy Abdul Urcii has been sworn in as the new director-general of Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), succeeding Mouzinho Saíde on the post.
She took office on Thursday (March 19), committing to strengthen professional ethics and improve the quality of patient care in a context marked by limited resources.
The ceremony took place at the Prime Minister’s office, where the new director undertook the responsibility of continuing the ongoing measures at the country’s largest hospital.
On the occasion, Farida Urci stated that she intends to focus on improving the conduct of healthcare professionals, emphasising communication between teams and patients as a way to ensure more humane care.
“It is possible to further improve the quality of care for our patients with the resources we have,” she said, adding that the efficiency of services does not depend solely on the available budget but also on how resources are used.
She also highlighted the need to ensure care delivery based on empathy, ethics, and the proper use of existing means, underlining that patient safety is a priority.
Upon swearing in Farida Urci, the Prime Minister recommended that the newly appointed director enhance the mechanisms for planning, management and the functioning of all hospital services in order to ensure dignified, humane care that meets quality standards and satisfies the users of the country’s largest health facility.
To achieve this objective, the new Director-General of Maputo Central Hospital, together with the other members of the management team, was challenged to prioritise the sound management of the institution’s available human, material, financial and technological resources, as well as to strengthen coordination mechanisms with other health units and institutions within the National Health Service.
The Prime Minister further expressed the expectation that, based on her professional experience, the appointee will value and mobilise the institution’s staff to continue improving the level of services provided at Maputo Central Hospital, in keeping with its status as a national reference health facility.
Farida Urci succeeds Mouznho de Assunção Osvaldo Saíde, who led Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) for almost nine years (June 2017 to March 2026).
Her career of just over two decades in the health sector, during which she previously served as Vice-Minister of Health, Clinical Director of HCM, Clinical Director of Magude District Hospital, Director of Operating Theatres at HCM, and Director of the Intensive Care Unit at the same health facility, has enabled her, on the one hand, to develop a solid understanding of the needs of the National Health System and, on the other, to be better equipped to contribute to the public policies currently being implemented with a view to meeting the needs of Mozambicans more effectively and advancing the government’s vision for the sector.
The newly appointed director holds a degree in Medicine from Eduardo Mondlane University, is a specialist in Anaesthesiology and Surgical Resuscitation from Victor Segalen Bordeaux II University and Maputo Central Hospital, and has a subspecialisation in Anaesthesia and Resuscitation for Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery from the General and Clinical Hospital in Valencia, Spain.
Her curriculum also includes experience in teaching (Internal Medicine in medical emergencies at the Faculty of Medicine of Eduardo Mondlane University), as well as serving as focal point of the Trauma and Emergency Commission; Director of Training in the specialty of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation; and Secretary-General of the College of Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation.
Maputo Central Hospital is the largest healthcare facility in Mozambique, playing a crucial role in the nation’s health system. The appointment of a new director is significant as it reflects ongoing efforts to improve healthcare services in the country, especially in the face of challenges such as limited resources and the need for better management practices. Farida Urci’s extensive experience in the health sector positions her well to address these challenges and enhance the quality of care provided to patients.
