Mozambique’s National Petroleum Institute (INP) is enhancing its technical capacity for upstream supervision in collaboration with Norway’s Offshore Directorate (NOD). This initiative aims to raise regulatory standards and align the national oil sector with international demands, focusing on sustainability and decarbonization in the energy sector.

Africa-Press – Mozambique. Mozambique’s National Petroleum Institute (INP) is strengthening its technical capacity for upstream supervision as part of a new cycle of cooperation with the Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD).

The project is aiming at raising regulatory standards and aligning the national oil sector with international demands.

According to a document, available on the INP’S website, the institutional strengthening arises from a series of recent technical meetings between the INP and the NOD, within the framework of the implementation of the bilateral Energy for Development (EfD) program, launched in 2023.

The central objective is to establish a results-oriented roadmap, consolidating regulatory excellence and responding to global challenges in upstream sector supervision.

Cooperation between Mozambique and Norway in the energy sector, spanning more than five decades, has played a key role in institutional strengthening, enhancing technical capacity, and promoting good governance practices throughout the entire value chain of the extractive sector.

The transition from the previous Oil for Development (OfD) program to Energy for Development (EfD) marks an adaptation to a new global context, characterized by increasing demands for sustainability, decarbonization, and the integration of renewable energies.

The Norwegian Offshore Directorate (NOD) describes itself as a government agency responsible for managing and regulating petroleum and offshore resources on the Norwegian continental shelf, ensuring optimal resources use with minimal environmental impact.

The cooperation between Mozambique and Norway in the energy sector has been ongoing for over fifty years, significantly contributing to institutional strengthening and technical capacity in Mozambique’s extractive industries. The transition from the Oil for Development (OfD) program to the Energy for Development (EfD) program reflects a shift towards addressing global sustainability challenges and integrating renewable energy solutions into the national framework. This partnership is crucial for enhancing governance practices and regulatory excellence in Mozambique’s oil sector.
