Africa-Press – Mozambique. The city of Bissau, capital of Guinea-Bissau, is hosting the 15th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) this Friday.
Leaders and representatives from nine Portuguese-speaking countries are attending the event, which takes place under the theme “CPLP and Food Sovereignty: A Path to Sustainable Development”.
Guinea-Bissau assumes the rotating presidency of the CPLP at a time of political turbulence, with the government facing criticism both at home and abroad. In this context, there is growing reflection on the challenges the country faces in leading the organisation and what this means for the wider Lusophone community.
Speaking in an interview, Dr Fransual Dias, a Guinean legal expert and political analyst, says; “This Presidency comes at a sensitive time for Guinea-Bissau. While it offers a chance to strengthen regional co-operation, it also exposes the government to greater scrutiny on issues of governance, democracy, and human rights. The country’s leadership must demonstrate maturity and responsibility on the international stage.”
