Africa-Press – Mozambique. From April 10 to May 11, Mário Macilau will exhibit “Immediacy” at the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Center in Maputo. This photographic exhibition explores everyday life. “From his childhood in the streets of Maputo to his exploration of local realities, Macilau showcases the social, environmental, and economic challenges faced by the country. His series of images reveals the impact of deforestation and the desperate search for resources, creating a visual narrative about the intersection between human life and environmental destruction,” as stated in the press release.

The exhibition “Immediacy” challenges the notion of instant gratification, emphasizing the importance of understanding and contributing to a better present and future.

Mário Macilau was born in 1984 in Maputo, where he currently lives and works. He is a multidisciplinary artist, primarily using photography but also exploring practices in painting, installation, video, sound, and poetry. His involvement with photography began in 2003, and his dedication to the profession began to solidify in 2007 when he exchanged his mother’s cell phone for his first camera. Macilau is known for his long-term projects addressing environmental, social, and labor issues in the country.

His photographic work stands out for exploring identity, political issues, and environmental conditions, often collaborating with marginalized groups to amplify their voices and raise awareness about social injustices and inequalities. Often starting with portraits, Macilau reveals a broader perspective of the reality he portrays.

Throughout his career, Macilau has traveled to over one hundred and fifty countries, receiving international recognition for his work through various awards such as the UNESCO Prize in France and “The Protection Project” in the United States. His works are regularly exhibited in solo and group exhibitions both in Mozambique and abroad.
