Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA) on Wednesday condemned the suspension of flights to and from Mozambique on the grounds of the Covid-19 \u2018Omicron\u2019 variant, as a \u201cdiscriminatory stance\u201d of the \u201cWest\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe CTA condemns the attitude of Western countries for the discriminatory stance they have adopted,\u201d said Nuno Quelhas, chairman of the CTA\u2019s Covid-19 private sector response committee, during a press conference in Maputo.<\/p>\n

For the Mozambican employers, the cancellation of flights suggests \u201ca disarticulation and lack of unity in the fight against\u201d the novel coronavirus, which has \u201cseverely affected the social and economic life\u201d of several countries, \u201cespecially with developing economies, like Mozambique\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese restrictions may contribute to the retraction of investments and contraction of the flow of economic activity in the country,\u201d Qelhas stressed.<\/p>\n

CTA further warned that the flow of travel to Mozambique could, if these bans continue, end the year at below US$180 million, pointing out that the tourism sector will probably be the worst affected by the current scenario.<\/p>\n

Regarding the restrictions to be adopted to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant, Mozambican businesspeople suggest incentives for those who present vaccination certificates, to encourage adherence and speed up the immunisation process.<\/p>\n

The CTA also suggests that the Mozambican government intercede with countries in the region on the \u201cneed to lift or rationalise travel restrictions\u201d between Africa and the European Union.<\/p>\n

Several countries, including Portugal, suspended flights with Mozambique, following the identification of the Omicron Covid variant in neighbouring South Africa.<\/p>\n

Mozambique\u2019s health minister, Armindo Tiago, announced on Tuesday that two Covid-19 cases reported in November are now being investigated as to the possibility of them being the Omicron variant, one patient having mild symptoms, and the other none.<\/p>\n

Minister Tiago said there was \u201cno reason for panic\u201d, noting that current scientific evidence did not show that the variant had \u201cgreater potential for transmission\u201d nor that it \u201cmay cause serious illness or escape the protection generated by the vaccine\u201d.<\/p>\n
