Mozambican President, Daniel Chapo, has announced that the country expects to market approximately 14.6 million tons of agricultural products in the current agricultural campaign.<\/p>\n
According to Chapo, who was speaking at the launch of the 2026 Agricultural Campaign, Rib\u00e1u\u00e8 district, Northern Province of Nampula, these figures correspond to 26 percent increase compared to the previous campaign.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf this volume, approximately 14.6 million tons are expected to be marketed. About 60 percent of the production should be sold during the peak period of the campaign, while the remaining 40 percent will be absorbed by the market by the end of the year\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n
The president explained that among the main products planned for commercialization are maize, cassava, beans, rice, vegetables, sesame, and cashew nuts.<\/p>\n
The largest availability of these products is concentrated in the northern provinces of Nampula and Niassa, and central provinces of Tete, Zamb\u00e9zia, and Manica.<\/p>\n
Chapo highlighted the productive potential of Nampula, a province he considered strategic for the dynamics of national agricultural trade. We need to strengthen agro-processing as a way to add value to national production and boost rural industrialization\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n
The government, he said, encourages the installation of small industrial units in the districts to locally process agricultural products and create jobs for young people and women. \u201cWe want to see the maize produced by our people generate flour produced in Mozambique. Crops such as cashew nuts, sesame, and peanuts should contribute to the emergence of new factories and greater dynamism in local economies\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n
Chapo also said that \u201cagriculture continues being one of the main bases of the country\u2019s economic independence\u201d, calling for greater involvement of the private sector in local purchasing, storage, logistics, and processing of national production.<\/p>\n
The agricultural sector represents approximately 25 to 30 percent of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employs over 80 percent of the workforce.
