Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong> <\/span>Four major African cities, namely Tripoli, Lagos, Algiers, and Harare, ranked among the bottom ten in the “Global Liveability Index for 2026” published by a local source, reflecting the ongoing impact of armed conflicts, weak healthcare services, and infrastructure gaps on the quality of life in several major cities across the continent.<\/p>\n

The annual index, which was surveyed in May 2026 and released in early July, evaluates 173 cities worldwide based on 30 indicators distributed across five main categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure, with each city receiving an overall score out of 100.<\/p>\n

According to the report, Copenhagen maintained its top position for the second consecutive year, followed by Vienna and Melbourne, while the global average for the index remained stable at 76.1 points, with improvements in healthcare scores globally contrasted by a decline in stability scores due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.<\/p>\n

Four African Cities Among the Worst 10 in the World<\/b><\/p>\n

At the bottom of the ranking, the Libyan capital Tripoli was placed 172nd globally with an overall score of 41 points, making it the least liveable city in Africa and second to last globally, with only the Syrian capital Damascus ranking lower at 173rd with a score of 31.6 points, according to the report. The report attributed Tripoli’s low ranking to years of civil conflict and institutional instability in Libya.<\/p>\n

Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria and one of the largest cities on the continent, ranked 168th with an overall score of 44 points, recording one of its weakest performances in the stability category with a score of 30 points, while its healthcare score was 38 points, and it performed relatively better in infrastructure with a score of 54 points.<\/p>\n

The report noted that rapid population growth in Lagos, increasing pressure on transportation and public utilities, housing shortages, healthcare constraints, and security concerns are combined factors that limit the city’s liveability despite its status as one of Africa’s largest economic hubs.<\/p>\n

The Algerian capital ranked 169th with a score of 43 points, showing mixed results, as it achieved a relatively better score in healthcare at 54 points, but weak infrastructure, which scored only 30 points, weighed down its overall ranking.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the capital of Zimbabwe, Harare, ranked 165th with an overall score of 45 points. While the city recorded a relatively strong score in education at 67 points, its low healthcare score of 33 points diminished its overall performance, as the city continues to face economic difficulties and pressures on public services, according to the report.<\/p>\n

Common Structural Factors<\/b><\/p>\n

The local source stated that its latest rankings highlight how armed conflicts, insecurity, governance challenges, and lack of investment in public services continue to undermine the quality of life in many cities, particularly in parts of Africa and regions affected by conflicts.<\/p>\n

In addition to the four African cities, the bottom ten also included other cities such as Kyiv in Ukraine, Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, Karachi in Pakistan, and Dhaka in Bangladesh, illustrating, according to the report, that conflicts, economic pressures, and infrastructure deficits remain key determinants of urban quality of life worldwide.<\/p>\n

The index from the local source is one of the prominent international standards for assessing living conditions in major cities, utilized by multinational companies, governments, and organizations concerned with expatriates in investment decisions, employee relocations, and hardship allowances.<\/p>\n
