{"id":1012,"date":"2021-06-18T16:06:32","date_gmt":"2021-06-18T16:06:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/?p=1012"},"modified":"2021-06-18T16:06:32","modified_gmt":"2021-06-18T16:06:32","slug":"mozambican-employers-unable-to-increase-minimum-wages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/economy\/mozambican-employers-unable-to-increase-minimum-wages","title":{"rendered":"Mozambican employers unable to increase minimum wages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-mozambique:<\/strong> The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique(CTA), the country\u2019s main employers\u2019 organisation, said on Wednesday that it would not be able to increase minimum wages, since private companies were \u201cin a coma\u201d as a result of Covid- 19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNegotiating [minimum wages] in these circumstances is clearly the same as going to negotiate with someone who is in a coma,\u201d said Vasco Manhi\u00e7a, deputy chairman of the CTA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo company is breathing, in good health and, if we currently don\u2019t have the capacity, it is unthinkable for us to enter into a negotiation process,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>According to the CTA deputy chairman Vasco Manhi\u00e7a, \u201cin the case of adjustments to minimum wages\u201d, it appears that \u201cthe reasons which dictated the suspension of the negotiation process last year [still] prevail\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to the CTA, the private sector in 2020 \u201crecorded revenue losses estimated at around US$1.1 billion, corresponding to 7% of GDP [gross domestic product], culminating in the suspension of about 90,000 jobs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a timid recovery at the end of 2020, \u201cin the first quarter of this year the situation became even more complicated, due to the emergence of the second wave of Covid-19\u201d, Manhi\u00e7a said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNational companies continue to feel the negative effects of the adverse context that characterizes our economy, and after an absolutely bleak first quarter, they are currently trying to create bases for their revitalisation,\u201d on the basis of an alleviation of Covid-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>But, \u201cit will not be an instantaneous process\u201d, he warned.<\/p>\n<p>Mozambique has registered a cumulative total of 844 Covid-19 deaths from its total 71,764 cases, 97% of which are accounted recovered, with 32 currently hospitalised.<\/p>\n<p>May registered the lowest number of Covid-19 cases and deaths in Mozambique since the February peak of 274 deaths and more than 20,000 infections.<\/p>\n<p>Although improvements have helped the country enter a new phase of restriction easing, health authorities have called for continued compliance with prevention measures amid fears of a third wave of infections such as that already detected in neighbouring South Africa<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AfricaPress-mozambique: The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique(CTA), the country\u2019s main employers\u2019 organisation, said on Wednesday that it would not be able to increase minimum wages, since private companies were \u201cin a coma\u201d as a result of Covid- 19. \u201cNegotiating [minimum wages] in these circumstances is clearly the same as going to negotiate with someone [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":84,"featured_media":998,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5,8],"tags":[324,140],"class_list":["post-1012","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-all-news","category-economy","category-homepage-english","tag-cta","tag-gdp"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.1 (Yoast SEO v27.0) -
