Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Lutero Simango was elected the new president of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) on Sunday, with 87.9 percent of the vote. He replaces his brother, Daviz Simango, who died in February of this year, a victim of illness.<\/p>\n

In second place was Silverio Ronguane, with 9.9 percent of the vote. Jos\u00e9 Domingos renounced his candidacy for the presidency of the third largest political force in the country at the last minute, and left the congress, complaining of non-observance of protocol, which, in his words, thereby favoured one of the other candidates.<\/p>\n

The electoral result is disputed by some of Jos\u00e9 Domingos\u2019 supporters, who met yesterday morning in Beira city, supposedly to outline strategies. Prompted by suspicions that the process was manipulated, the group has not ruled out the possibility of challenging the outcome.<\/p>\n

The electoral commission in charge of the process also counted nine null and two blank votes.<\/p>\n

In his first intervention after the election, a process attended by 529 MDM congressmen, Lutero Simango thanked members for the trust they had put in his leadership of the MDM in the near future.<\/p>\n

He swore to serve and carry out with zeal and dedication the role of president of the party, inspired by the ideals of his brother.<\/p>\n

Lutero Simango also expressed gratitude to his two fellow-candidates, Jos\u00e9 Domingos and Silv\u00e9rio Ronguane, who over the past few days had worked to stimulate the support of the members.<\/p>\n
