Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique Airlines (LAM) is using alternative routes to preserve the fleet\u2019s maintenance capacity following flight restrictions, the chairman of the state-owned airline told Lusa on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe felt some impact from the ban on flights between Mozambique and some destinations, but we adapted quickly to that reality, using alternative routes to ensure the supply of parts needed to maintain our aircraft,\u201d Jo\u00e3o P\u00f3 Jorge said.<\/p>\n

He said that one of the alternatives had been to import parts via routes linking Africa and Europe via Asia, as flights directly from Mozambique were prohibited from entering the European space.<\/p>\n

The president of LAM noted that Europe is the main source of supply of parts for the Mozambican flagship carrier.<\/p>\n

To contain the spread of the new strain of SARS-CoV-2, several countries, including Portugal, have closed borders to foreigners or suspended and restricted international travel to southern Africa, notably Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The new variant, Omicron, was recently identified in South Africa.<\/p>\n
