Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) has suspended \u2018elective\u2019 (non-essential) surgeries in order to save existing blood stocks for the festive season, when the demand for blood is generally high.<\/p>\n

According to Farida Urci, clinical director at the country\u2019s largest hospital, HCM at the moment has about 300 units of blood, a level which represents a degree of pressure for the institution. In the same period in 2020, the HCM had 500 units of blood.<\/p>\n

Doctor Urci remarked on the need to constantly replenish supplies whenever a unit of blood was used.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor there to be enough blood the festive season, we have had to interrupt scheduled (elective) surgeries, which are those that do not put the patient\u2019s life at risk, and we are prioritizing only emergency surgery,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

Urci said that the Covid-19 pandemic had reduced the number of blood donors at health units over the last two years, leaving stocks in hospitals at a low level.<\/p>\n

Speaking this Wednesday at a press conference on HCM\u2019s preparations for the festive season, Urci reassured listeners that the hospital had reinforced emergency room teams, in particular nurses, doctors and assistants.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn terms of medical-surgical material and medicines, sufficient vital medicines had over three months been acquired to treat the patients during this period,\u201d she underlined.<\/p>\n
