{"id":11061,"date":"2021-12-20T16:33:49","date_gmt":"2021-12-20T16:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/?p=11061"},"modified":"2021-12-20T15:34:02","modified_gmt":"2021-12-20T15:34:02","slug":"mozambiques-nyusi-says-jihadist-attacks-dropped-in-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/mozambiques-nyusi-says-jihadist-attacks-dropped-in-2021","title":{"rendered":"Mozambique\u2019s Nyusi says jihadist attacks dropped in 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s President Filipe Nyusi Thursday said his country had witnessed fewer jihadist attacks this year than last, after Rwanda and neighbouring countries helped tackle the four-year insurgency.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s gas-rich Cabo Delgado province has been rocked by attacks by Islamic State-linked militants since 2017, killing at least 3,340 people and displacing more than 800,000 others.<\/p>\n<p>But since July, more than 3,100 African, European and US soldiers have been deployed to the northern province to quell the unrest.<\/p>\n<p>Despite ongoing attacks against villages and civilians on a weekly basis, Nyusi told parliament that these efforts had been partially successful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were able to reduce terrorist attacks by three times,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>While in 2020 the country registered just over 160 attacks, that number was reduced to 52 in 2021, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said it was thanks in part to \u201cmilitary cooperation\u201d with Rwanda and the 16-nation Southern African Development Community of its neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n<p>Nyusi said recent operations had led to the capture of \u201c245 suspected terrorists\u201d, and killing of about 200 \u201cterrorists\u201d and 10 \u201cterrorist leaders\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing fears the jihadists were instead spreading to territory adjacent to Cabo Delgado, he said some suspected fighters had also been captured in the province of Niassa.<\/p>\n<p>Nyusi however discouraged the displaced from returning to their villages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\">Mozambique<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique.
