Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>President Filipe Nyusi on Monday suspended curfews for the Christmas and New Year\u2019s Eve celebrations, while maintaining most of the restrictions related to the prevention of Covid-19 in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cExceptionally, the curfew schedule is suspended on the night of 24-25 and the night of 31 December to 1 January, to allow families to celebrate these moments,\u201d the Mozambican head of state said during an address to the nation.<\/p>\n

The curfew in force in the country\u2019s main cities runs from 00:00 to 04:00 (22:00 to 02:00 in Lisbon).<\/p>\n

Filipe Nyusi maintained almost all the measures, having banned visits to prisoners due to the \u201cexponential increase\u201d of cases in prisons, as well as reduced the number of visitors to patients in hospitals from two to one per day.<\/p>\n

The measures will be in force for another 30 days from Tuesday until January 19, 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet it be clear that the Government\u2019s intention is not to punish people, but to draw attention and [appeal] to awareness,\u201d he said, warning of the \u201cgigantic and worrying evolution\u201d of the weekly positivity rate in the country, which has risen from 0.4% to 24.5% in the last four weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe transmission of the pandemic is higher in the southern part of the country,\u201d Nyusi said, noting that surveillance would be intensified and, if the red line is crossed, \u201cmore drastic measures will be taken\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to the head of state, 7.8 million people have been immunised with at least one dose of the vaccine against the new coronavirus in the country, of which 5.4 percent are fully vaccinated.<\/p>\n

Mozambique has a total of 1,952 deaths and 160,457 cases, of which 150,484 have recovered.<\/p>\n
