Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Terrorist attacks in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula have displaced about 3,000 people from their homes, according to the Secretary of State for the province, Dinis Vilankulo, cited in Tuesday\u2019s issue of the independent newssheet \u201cCarta de Mocambique\u201d.<\/p>\n

These are families that fled from villages in Mecula district, near the border with Cabo Delgado province, in late November and early December, and have sought safety in Mecula town.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a meeting with district police officers, Vilankulo named the villages attacked as Naulala 2, Chitande, Muchenga and Macalange, where residents fled after raiders had burnt down their homes.<\/p>\n

Vilankulo called for increased vigilance and greater collaboration between citizens and the police, in order to prevent further incursions by the terrorist group.<\/p>\n

The number of people fleeing into Mecula town is continuing to rise. According to a report in the newssheet \u201cMediafax\u201d, on Christmas Eve (last Friday) 479 displaced people arrived. The International Organisation for Migration (OIM) warns that more are expected in the coming days.<\/p>\n

They have been given temporary accommodation in the Culutando neighbourhood and in the 16th June primary school. The displaced left all their possession behind and require food and drinking water, as well as shelter.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a ceremony in Maputo on Monday, when ranks were awarded to recently promoted police officers, Interior Minister Arsenia Massingue stressed the challenges posed by \u201cnew foci of insurgency\u201d in Niassa, as well as by the wave of kidnappings in the country\u2019s main cities.<\/p>\n

It was the task of the newly promoted officers, she said, to work with commitment, zeal, dedication and courage in order to respond to such challenges. The officers \u201cnow have an opportunity to make your own history\u201d, she said, carrying out their tasks tenaciously, and thus proving themselves \u201cthe finest children of the country\u201d.<\/p>\n

Regardless of their ranks, or the positions they occupy, Massingue stressed, they must always be ready to comply with the orders issued by their superiors.<\/p>\n
