Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>More than 300 households living in the administrative post of Messano, in the southern Mozambican province of Gaza, are now connected to the national electricity grid, after the inauguration last week of a 15 kilometre medium voltage line, plus five kilometres of low voltage line, according to a report in Monday\u2019s issue of the Maputo daily \u201cNoticias\u201d.<\/p>\n

Financed solely by Mozambique\u2019s publicly owned electricity company, EDM, the infrastructure has cost 31.7 million meticais (about 495,000 US dollars, at the current exchange rate) and also includes three sub-stations and 100 lampposts for public lighting. The connection will benefit residents of Changanhane, Zucula, Fulane and Mamonho hamlets.<\/p>\n

The residents have expressed joy following the recent connection, which they believe will fast-track local development and most of them are planning to purchase some electrical devices for household use.<\/p>\n

One of the beneficiaries, Rafael Ubisse said that he was not expecting to be connected to the power grid, and the move was a true Christmas gift. Before the connection, they used candles for lighting, which from time to time caused fire in some houses.<\/p>\n

The provincial Governor, Margarida Mapandzene, said the connection is a synonym for development, because it will boost and improve other services such as water supply, health care, education and communications.<\/p>\n

Mapandzene urged communities to denounce anyone who might attempt to vandalise the grid, so that they can be held accountable for their crimes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to ensure that our joy lasts longer, we must all fight every form of theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructures\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n

Gaza province currently has 37 administrative posts connected to the national power grid and only seven are still to be connected, which should be achieved over the short to medium term.<\/p>\n
