Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Transport operators in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula have put up their fares by about 40 per cent.<\/p>\n

The new fares took effect on Sunday, and are based on journey length. According to the Nampula Transport Association (Astra), the fare has risen from 1.25 meticais per kilometre to 1.75 meticais per kilometre.<\/p>\n

A new fare schedule published by Astra covers 32 destinations within the province. The shortest journeys, from Nampula city to Marratane, and from Nampula to Lourenco, now cost 35 meticais (about 55 US cents) instead of the previous fare of 30 meticais.<\/p>\n

The longest distances are Nampula-Malema, Nampula-Namapa and Nampula-Memba, all about 250 kilometres long. The fare for these journeys is now 430 meticais, rather than 300 meticais (an increase of 43 per cent).<\/p>\n

The journey from Nampula to the port of Nacala now costs 350 rather than 250 meticais while the journey from Nampula to Mozambique Island costs 330 rather than 250 meticais (increases of 40 and 32 per cent respectively).<\/p>\n

In one case, the route from Nampula to the coastal district of Moma, the fare actually went down \u2013 the operators on this route had been charging 400 meticais, but Astra said this fare was illegal and forced a reduction to 360 meticais.<\/p>\n

The bus companies were not pleased: they argued the bad state of the road justified a higher fare, and they wanted it increased to 500 meticais.<\/p>\n
