Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Cabo Delgado Governor Valige Tauabo said on Friday in Pemba that military operations by forces fighting the armed insurgency are allowing basic services to be re-established in points that were under rebel rule.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur forces and their counterparts, from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries and Rwanda, are working hard to establish peace in those districts and this hard work has allowed us to start installing basic services,\u201d Valige Tauabo said.<\/p>\n

The official was speaking moments after a symbolic ceremony that marked the reception of 80 decoders offered by Mozambique Television, means that will be set up in the districts of the province, including some affected by the insurgency (Quissanga and Moc\u00edmboa da Praia), as part of the digital migration underway in the country,<\/p>\n

For Valige Tauabo, the re-establishment of basic services is the condition for the return of residents that abandoned these places due to the insurgents.<\/p>\n

Cabo Delgado province is rich in natural gas, but, terrorised since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks being claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.<\/p>\n

The conflict has led to more than 3,100 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and more than 817,000 displaced people, according to Mozambican authorities.<\/p>\n

Since July, an offensive by government troops with support from Rwanda which was later joined by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) allowed for increased security, recovering several areas where there was rebel presence, including the town of Mocimboa da Praia, which had been occupied since August 2020.<\/p>\n
