Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>\u2013 The Mozambican police arrested a man who killed his 51-year-old aunt with a machete on suspicion of witchcraft, blaming her for his \u201clack of luck,\u201d a source told Lusa.<\/p>\n

The crime occurred in the early hours of Monday in Zambezia, central Mozambique, and the man was arrested the next day.<\/p>\n

The young man, 25, resident in Maputo, the country\u2019s capital, had travelled to Zambezia province to expose his difficulties in life and, at a meeting, said that \u201chis aunts were to blame for his love and financial problems,\u201d said the spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Zambezia, Miguel Caetano.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe returned to his homeland for this purpose,\u201d Miguel Caetano said, adding that this is the third case of death for suspected witchcraft that has occurred in Zambezia this year.<\/p>\n

The murder of elderly people in rural Mozambique is a frequent crime and usually perpetrated by relatives, who accuse them of supernatural acts, blaming them for family disagreements and misfortune.<\/p>\n

In Inhambane province alone, in southern Mozambique, at least 17 elderly people were killed in 2020 due to accusations of witchcraft, primarily by relatives, according to the latest figures provided by the police.<\/p>\n
