Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Tolls on the Maputo ring road, contested by Mozambican civil society organisations, will start to be charged from 1 February, the concession company Rede Vi\u00e1ria de Mo\u00e7ambique (Revimo) announced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Prices range from 40 meticais (55 euro cents) for light vehicles to 580 meticais (\u20ac8) for heavy vehicles, with discounts of up to 75% for public transport and 60% for frequent users.<\/p>\n

When travelling through several collection points, only the first is paid, Revimo added.<\/p>\n

Four toll plazas have been installed along around 70 kilometres of road serving the cities of Maputo, Matola and Marracuene.<\/p>\n

The Centre for Public Integrity (CIP), a Mozambican non-governmental organisation (NGO), said on Monday that Mozambicans could refuse to pay, alleging \u201cunconstitutionality and illegalities.<\/p>\n

According to the organisation, the government should create \u201calternative ways\u201d to ensure \u201cthe principle of equality between citizens and universal access to public services.<\/p>\n

CIP also complained about the \u201cconcession of public infrastructures to a private company, without a public tender, for a period longer than provided for by law\u201d.<\/p>\n

Another Mozambican NGO, the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), has also challenged the role of (Revimo) and advocates the revocation of the Maputo Ring Road concession.<\/p>\n

The NGO questioned the interests of the concession company, stating that the people \u201cdo not know its organisational structure and the circumstances in which it was created\u201d.<\/p>\n
