Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique gained one point in the 2021 Corruption Perceptions Index, released on Tuesday by Transparency International (TI), helping it to rise two places to 147th place from 149th in the 2020 index.<\/p>\n

Despite this improvement, the country remains in the group of those in sub-Saharan Africa that have slipped furthest in recent years \u2013 alongside the Republic of Congo, Malawi, Madagascar, Liberia and Zambia \u2013 a it has lost six points since 2012, the Berlin-based organisation notes.<\/p>\n

Angola, meanwhile, has added eight points since 2014, putting it in the group of countries that have made the greatest progress.<\/p>\n

Transparency International (TI) has warned Mozambique that it must make concerted efforts to support \u201ctransparency and accountability\u201d or risk entering a \u201cdownward spiral\u201d \u2013 in the words of Mokgabo Kupe, TI\u2019s advisor for Southern Africa, in 2021.<\/p>\n

The Centre for Public Integrity (CIP), a non-governmental organisation based in Mozambique, said last year that there had been improvements in the country\u2019s anti-corruption laws since 2004, but that these were not having an effect, calling for further reforms.<\/p>\n

The average score for sub-Saharan Africa in the 2021 index is 33, the lowest of any continent, and 44 of its countries score below 50 points.<\/p>\n

As for other Portuguese-language countries, Portugal is ranked 33rd in the world with 62 points, followed by Cabo Verde in 39th, with 58 points, S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 and Pr\u00edncipe in 68th, with 45 points, East Timor in 82nd, with 41 points, and Angola in 136th, with 29 points. Guinea-Bissau is 162nd, with 21 points and Equatorial Guinea 171th, with just 17 \u2013 prompting particularly critical comments in the TI report.<\/p>\n

TI\u2019s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) ranks 180 countries and territories by levels of perceived corruption in the public sector, on a scale of zero (highly corrupt) to 100 points (free of perceived corruption).<\/p>\n
