Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) on Saturday morning (02-05) prevented a peaceful march against the charging of tolls on roads in the city of Maputo, and arrested the organizers of the march.<\/p>\n

The march had been called by a group of young people to protest the levying of tolls on the Maputo Ring Road.<\/p>\n

According to the Mozambican press, armed police elements were already deployed in strategic locations in the Mozambican capital by early morning.<\/p>\n

They surrounded the location where the protest was to begin and violently dispersed the demonstrators. The protest organizers, who were detained, were taken to the 10th and 8th precinct police stations in Maputo, where they were held for a few hours before being released.<\/p>\n

The protest was scheduled to take place on the previous week, but was prevented by procedural procedures of the Maputo city council in response to correspondence informing the council of the protesters\u2019 intention to stage the march.<\/p>\n
