{"id":13733,"date":"2022-02-09T15:44:46","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T15:44:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/?p=13733"},"modified":"2022-02-09T14:59:57","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T14:59:57","slug":"captured-jihadists-in-mozambique-say-insurgency-weakening-afp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/captured-jihadists-in-mozambique-say-insurgency-weakening-afp","title":{"rendered":"Captured jihadists in Mozambique say insurgency \u2018weakening\u2019 \u2013 AFP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Rwandan army late last month let journalists interview some of the fighters that it had captured since launching operations in the troubled region last July.<\/p>\n<p>Linked to the so-called Islamic State, the extremist group has rampaged across towns and villages in northern Mozambique since 2017 with the goal of establishing a hardline caliphate.<\/p>\n<p>It is known locally as Al Shabab, although it has no link to the group with a similar name in Somalia.<\/p>\n<p>Jusuf Mohamed, a Mozambican member, said the insurgents had lost ground in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>The militants never feared Mozambican soldiers, the detained fighter, who appeared in his twenties said.<\/p>\n<p>But since Rwandan defence forces deployed in the country six months ago, they have \u201cstarted to get afraid and have become very weak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve actually lost their power,\u201d he told reporters at a Rwandan base in Cabo Delgado province a few days after being captured, his hair cut short and wearing a floral tan-and-red shirt.<\/p>\n<p>They \u201cnow run away as soon as they hear the first Rwandan gunshot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said their commanders had instructed them \u201cnot to attack\u201d the Rwandans.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him, an assortment of seized equipment including rocket-propelled grenades, rifles and mobile handsets lay on a canvas sheet.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed and other jihadists were being held by Rwandan forces, but were soon to be handed over to Mozambican authorities.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tanzanian, Arab leaders<\/b><\/p>\n<p>After the jihadists last year attacked the northern port city of Palma, killing dozens, Rwanda in July deployed around 1,000 troops to the wider province.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow detained militant Madi Muhamed Sadi agreed that the jihadists were struggling to retaliate against \u201cthe new army.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All they \u201cdo now is run\u201d whenever their positions are raided, said Sadi, a Tanzanian in a navy-blue linen shirt.<\/p>\n<p>It was unclear when Sadi joined the rebels, but he said most of the group\u2019s leaders were Tanzanian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was also one Mozambican, then three white guys, two of whom died before I arrived,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also some Arabs\u2026 They speak Swahili.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Mu byihebe harimo abazungu, babiri barishwe<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Nta munyarwanda urimo<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Abayobozi bakuru baba muri Iraq<\/p>\n<p>Soma ubuhamya bw\u2019ibyihebe byafashwe n\u2019Ingabo z\u2019u Rwanda i Cabo Delgado.<\/p>\n<p>Harimo uwari ushinzwe gukoresha mudasobwa n\u2019undi wari indwanyi.<\/p>\n<p>?https:\/\/t.co\/dtsd7AKn0E<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 IGIHE (@IGIHE) February 8, 2022<\/p>\n<p>President Filipe Nyusi has said the region has suffered fewer attacks since the deployment of more than 3,100 foreign troops last year \u2014 a number that includes contingents from Rwanda and southern African countries as well as support from European and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple sources have told AFP that Rwanda\u2019s troops seem to be the most effective contingent, and the one that is deployed most frequently in combat operations.<\/p>\n<p>The nearly five-year-old insurgency has killed more than 3,700 people and driven more than 800,000 from their homes.<\/p>\n<p>The fighting has also forced global energy giant TotalEnergies to suspend a multi-billion-dollar natural gas operation in Afungi, near Palma.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the apparent progress, sporadic attacks against civilians are still reported in the northern coastal province, the latest killing four people last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The violence is also shifting inland into neighbouring Niassa province.<\/p>\n<p>Sadi said the jihadists remained determined to continue their quest, despite the setbacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to continue. We can\u2019t go back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><b>Rape<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Another captured fighter, Aby Bakhar Selim, said he was forced to join the extremists after they raided his village of Macomia and beheaded his father, before capturing him, his brother and younger sister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey raped her and now she\u2019s heavily pregnant,\u201d the young Mozambican said of his sister.<\/p>\n<p>While he says he is a member of the group, he says he opposes the way his fellow fighters abuse women and children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really hurts me. Women and children are dying there for no reason,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen are raped, daily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The jihadists have abducted more than 600 women and children over the past three years, Human Rights Watch said late last year.<\/p>\n<p>The group force young women and girls to \u201cmarry\u201d their fighters \u201cwho enslave and sexually abuse them\u201d while some have been sold off to foreign militants for between $600 and $1,800, it said.<\/p>\n<p>At the Rwandan base after managing to escape the group, Elise Joaki, a woman with neatly plaited hair who appeared in her late twenties, recounted her horrific ordeal after being abducted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a woman, you spend the first whole month being raped to prepare you to belong to one man they will choose for you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>And if \u201cyou refuse to sleep with him, he will beat you\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you remove your veil and are unlucky to be seen by a man, he will beat you,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife there always sucks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many Tanzanians, whites are also included \u2026 Three whites men,said to be from #SouthAfrica, were killed and at least two were injured<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed Ahmed Dadi said their job was to transport war wounded and escort women to plunderhttps:\/\/t.co\/ouVimhsPbK<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Cabo Delgado (@DelgadoCabo) February 8, 2022<\/p>\n<p>Truly fascinating.
