Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Diversified industrial group Barloworld is continuing on its recovery trajectory after a solid performance in its equipment and car rental and leasing segments delivered favourable results.<\/p>\n

Despite supply chain constraints, Barloworld said in a trading update the uptick in its results for the three months ending December 31 2021 was further supported by sustainable cost management and healthy free cash flow generation by the group\u2019s core operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe group remains within its target debt, and gearing levels remain well within our covenants, with net debt to ebitda well below 1.0 times,\u201d Barloworld said. Ebitda is an acronym for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe group continued to deliver a solid performance in the first quarter of the financial year, bolstered by favourable results in December,\u201d said the group.<\/p>\n

The centenarian provides industrial processing, distribution, and services companies with industrial equipment and consumer industries as its two primary areas of focus, serving the mining, construction, energy and transportation sectors.<\/p>\n

The Johannesburg-based company also offers car rental, leasing and fleet services, as well as used-vehicle and disposal solutions.<\/p>\n

Barloworld said its car rental business was benefiting on the back of a rebound in domestic travel and uptake of subscription offerings in the first quarter, resulting in an improvement in trading volume to 67.5% of 2019 levels.<\/p>\n

CEO Dominic Sewela has overseen efforts that successfully turned around the company\u2019s car rental business, which was previously battered by the fall-off in tourism numbers as lockdown restrictions curbed travel by corporates and individuals.<\/p>\n

The company said the business continued to deliver solid earnings, which are even higher than pre-Covid levels. Strong demand and strict fleet management saw Barloworld\u2019s fleet utilisation breach the 80% mark at an average of 81%.<\/p>\n

Despite an uncertain operating environment, its industrial equipment and services segment, Equipment Southern Africa, performed well in the quarter. It highlighted Mozambique, Zambia and Angola, which delivered \u201cexceptional revenue growth\u201d on the back of bullish coal, copper and oil prices. This despite supply chain disruptions that resulted in the delayed delivery of large mining package deals in the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe operating margin is tracking above the comparable period in the prior financial year, driven by well-controlled expenses,\u201d Barloworld said.<\/p>\n

Its Bartrac joint venture in the Democratic Republic of the Congo also delivered strong results and contributed a positive share of associate profits.<\/p>\n

Barloworld in November rewarded shareholders with a payout equivalent to a 10th of its market value. This was after earnings recovered strongly from the Covid-19-induced setback.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in its consumer industries businesses, Barloworld said Ingrain\u2019s performance for the three months to December 31 2021 reflected higher sales volumes and benefits would accrue from the first year of a full 12-month period in Barloworld\u2019s financials in this period.<\/p>\n

In 2020, Barloworld acquired the starch business from Tongaat Hulett for R5.260bn, which it rebranded Ingrain.<\/p>\n

The segment experienced increased export sales volumes during the period despite the restricted availability of food-grade containers and shipping space from SA ports, with a good recovery in demand from regional markets after the prior period\u2019s Covid-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n

The multinational expects to release interim financial results on or about Monday, May 23 2022.<\/p>\n

Barloworld\u2019s share price closed 4.31% higher at R145.10 on Thursday.<\/p>\n
