Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Yesterday, in Maputo, Gorongosa National Park (PNG) and Nedbank Mo\u00e7ambique SA (Nedbank) co-signed a partnership agreement under the auspices of Gorongosa Business Club, an initiative in operation since 2014.<\/p>\n

The Club aims to encourage and involve the Mozambican business community in the effort to restore one of the most emblematic parks in Africa and in the world. Nedbank is committed to continuing to support the GNP Conservation Department, which oversees the implementation of management decisions in the Park and the surrounding Sustainable Development Zone. All of the Department of Conservation\u2019s programs \u2013 Veterinary Services, Enforcement, Wildlife Management and Ecosystem Integrity are focused on strong, measurable results that ensure continued protection of Gorongosa\u2019s precious biodiversity.<\/p>\n

As part of the signing of this agreement, Joel Rodrigues, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Nedbank, praised the excellent work that Gorongosa National Park is doing not only for the preservation of the Park, but also for the development of the region, the communities around it and the international promotion of Mozambique. \u201cSupporting Gorongosa National Park and in particular its Department of Conservation is effectively supporting the heroic mission of protecting the Park\u2019s wildlife, thus helping to restore it to its rightful place as one of the largest parks in Africa\u201d, said Joel Rodrigues visibly satisfied with this partnership.<\/p>\n

During the event, the GNP Warden, Pedro Muagura, commented: \u201cWe are pleased to renew this partnership with Nedbank\u201d, noting that \u201cSupporting the Department of Conservation will contribute to improve our ability to face the challenges that threaten the biodiversity of the GNP. Our enforcement team needs to strengthen not only its training capacity in physical, tactical terms, but also in the field of legislation and procedures, as well as in its training in the use of work equipment. Nedbank\u2019s contribution will be added to the \u201cpot\u201d of contributions from the various partners in this area that requires large investments for relatively long periods of time\u201d, added Muagura.<\/p>\n

About the Gorongosa Project<\/b><\/p>\n

Gorongosa National Park (GNP) in Mozambique is perhaps Africa\u2019s greatest wildlife restoration story. In 2008, a 20-year Public-Private Partnership was established for the joint management of GNP between the Government of Mozambique and the Carr Foundation (Gorongosa Restoration Project), a US nonprofit organization. In 2018, the Government of Mozambique signed an extension of the joint management agreement for another 25 years. By adopting a 21st Century conservation model of balancing the needs of wildlife and people, Gorongosa is protecting and saving this beautiful wilderness, returning it to its rightful place as one of Africa\u2019s greatest national parks.<\/p>\n

GNP has been described as one of the most diverse parks on Earth, covering a vast expanse of 400,000 hectares. In recent years, the Gorongosa Project, with the support of Mozambique\u2019s National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC), has ensured the protection of a recovering population of lions in this system and has been recognized as one of National Geographic\u2019s \u201cLast Wild Places\u201d and by TIME Magazine as one of the \u201cWorld\u2019s Greatest Places \u2013 2019\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Gorongosa Project works with the Government of Mozambique Ministry of Land and Environment, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Sea and Fisheries, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Sofala Province Directorates of each of these Ministries, and the District representatives of each of these Ministries. The Project collaborates with traditional leaders in community \u201cregulados\u201d (a regulado is a traditional governance structure) through Natural Resource Committees.<\/p>\n

Gorongosa collaborates with UN Habitat, the Red Cross, and the World Food Program. The Project receives support and advice from stakeholder partners such as USAID, Irish Aid, Norway, Canada, Portugal, EU, HHMI and more. We engage with more than thirty research universities around the world, including University Eduardo Mondlane, UniLurio, University of Lisbon, Oxford University, Princeton University, and more.<\/p>\n
