Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Canada on Friday donated over one million doses of vaccines against Covid-19 from AstraZeneca, under the Covax initiative, announced the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (Unicef).<\/p>\n

\u201cThese doses complement the 12,481,620 doses already obtained by the Mozambican government, totalling 13,650,420 doses, with the support of various partners in Mozambique, as part of the Covax initiative,\u201d the UNICEF statement said.<\/p>\n

The supply of vaccines from Canada is part of the North American country\u2019s global commitment to channel US$2.5 billion (2.1 billion euros) into the response to Covid-19, the statement said.<\/p>\n

Unicef notes that since the start of the pandemic, the United Nations system in Mozambique has worked with national authorities, businesses and civil society to identify and address the needs of the population in responding to the health crisis and its socio-economic effects.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada is very proud that we are able to provide additional doses to the people of Mozambique through our support of Covax and congratulates the Government of Mozambique on the strong implementation of its vaccination program to date,\u201d said Caroline Delany, Canada\u2019s High Commissioner in Maputo.<\/p>\n

Canada will continue to seek ways to strengthen the Covax mechanism\u2019s ability to respond to global demands to end the acute phase of the pandemic and encourages countries to address their requests for additional vaccine supplies, Delany continued.<\/p>\n

The Covax mechanism is led by the Coalition for Innovation in Epidemic Preparedness (Cepi), the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (Gavi) and the World Health Organization (WHO), working in partnership with Unicef.<\/p>\n

The initiative provides for the supply of vaccines for 20 per cent of the population of each participating country.<\/p>\n

Today, the Mozambique Red Cross donated to the Ministry of Health 30 therapeutic oxygen concentration machines and 30,000 units of FFP2 masks.<\/p>\n

Mozambique has a cumulative total of 2,183 deaths and 224,347 cases of Covid-19, of which 96% have recovered from the disease.<\/p>\n
