Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The road link between the district of Mavago and the rest of Niassa province has been interrupted since yesterday following the collapse of two of the five spans of the concrete bridge over the Luatize river.<\/p>\n

The decking gave way to the power of the river floodwaters, the result of heavy rain falling in this region of the country recently.<\/p>\n

More than 37,000 people living in Mavago are cut off, says Domingos Binar, provincial director of Planning and Infrastructure Services.<\/p>\n

The next few days will probably be characterised by difficulties getting patients to Lichinga Provincial Hospital and shortages of essential goods, he said.<\/p>\n

The flow of the Luatize river does not actually exceed alert level, he remarked, but while nevertheless advising against attempting to cross by boat.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the National Roads Administration (ANE) is studying how to reinstate the road connection, cut near the entrance to the district headquarters town.<\/p>\n

Oreste Zezela, ANE delegate in Niassa, said that one alternative is a mobile bridge currently in Beira (Sofala province). A truck has been mobilised to transport the bridge, whose arrival in Mavago is scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Mavago is connected to the rest of the province by two roads, namely via Muembe and Majune.<\/p>\n
