Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>India will donate US$10 million (\u20ac8.8 million) to Mozambique for the creation of drinking water supply networks in Cabo Delgado, a region in the north of the country affected by an armed insurgency, the authorities announced on Monday.<\/p>\n

The amount is included in a memorandum of understanding signed today between Mozambique\u2019s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Ver\u00f3nica Macamo, and India\u2019s high commissioner to Mozambique, Ankan Banerjee.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe memorandum we signed is an enormous contribution to the lives of the population of Cabo Delgado province, particularly in Mueda district, the project\u2019s area of focus, which will have an abundance of drinking water,\u201d Minister Macamo said.<\/p>\n

She said India was a prominent partner of Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Among the most recent support is the donation of vaccines against Covid-19, supply with concessional financing of locomotives and carriages for the railway lines and boats for the navy.<\/p>\n

Cabo Delgado province is rich in natural gas but has been terrorised since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.<\/p>\n

The conflict has led to more than 3,100 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and more than 817,000 displaced people, according to Mozambican authorities.<\/p>\n

Since July, an offensive by government troops with support from Rwanda, later joined by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), allowed for an increase in security, recovering several areas where there was a rebel presence.<\/p>\n
