Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>At least six people died on Friday when they were swept away by flood waters in northern Mozambique, after torrential rains caused rivers to overflow, the authorities announced this Monday.<\/p>\n

The six victims were trying to cross water courses in the district of Lalaua, which is bordered by the L\u00fario river, in Nampula province, about 2,000 kilometres north of the capital, Maputo, district administrator Afredo Matata said, quoted by Radio Mozambique.<\/p>\n

In an effort to prevent further accidents, authorities have banned all waterway crossings for five days.<\/p>\n

In Maputo province, in the south of the country, the rain caused flooding between Machubo and the village of Manhi\u00e7a, forcing inhabitants the use of an alternative 180-kilometre connection in place of the usual 60-kilometre journey.<\/p>\n

Mozambique is currently in the middle of its annual cyclone season, whose main effects are felt between November and April.<\/p>\n
