Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Over 3,600 people need urgent humanitarian assistance in the central Mozambican province of Manica, after losing their houses, crops and other means of livelihood, as a result of the recent tropical cyclone Ana.<\/p>\n

The head of the technical department of the government\u2019s relief agency, the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD), Vernito Gonga, said that out of this number only 648 households are receiving food aid from the government and its partners. But efforts are underway to ensure more assistance to those without food.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are 648 households receiving food aid, amounting to 19 per cent of those in need. The others have no support and as a government we are working in coordination with our partners to ensure that all the victims benefit from assistance,\u201d Gonga said.<\/p>\n

The World Food Programme (WFP), he added, is the partner which has promptly responded to the government\u2019s requests for support. The UN Agency is delivering timely and direct food aid to the victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope that other partners join the cause and help to support the households who are now homeless and without food,\u201d Gonga declared.<\/p>\n

Districts such as Barue, Gondola, Mossurize and the provincial capital, Chimoio, are among the regions most affected by Ana, which caused four deaths and destroyed infrastructures such as schools, and health centres.<\/p>\n

Because of the storm, Chimoio and Gondola went for weeks without power, as electricity transmission pylons were blown down.<\/p>\n
