{"id":14823,"date":"2022-02-25T15:33:24","date_gmt":"2022-02-25T15:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/?p=14823"},"modified":"2022-02-25T14:23:13","modified_gmt":"2022-02-25T14:23:13","slug":"mozambican-government-advocates-dialogue-in-xinavane-watch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/mozambican-government-advocates-dialogue-in-xinavane-watch","title":{"rendered":"Mozambican government advocates dialogue in Xinavane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mozambique, Celso Correia, on Thursday (24-02) called for dialogue to end the differences between workers and the management of A\u00e7ucareira de Xinavane that led to riots and vandalism of infrastructure on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of this may be resolved, in fact, by dialogue,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n<p>Correia was speaking to journalists at the A\u00e7ucareira da Maragra, in Manhi\u00e7a district, Maputo province, after a meeting between representatives of national sugar companies and sugar producer associations to assess the 2020\/2021 campaign and discuss perspectives for the 2021\/2022 campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Without dwelling on Wednesday\u2019s riots in Xinavane, Manhi\u00e7a district, Minister Correia indicated disagreements between management, workers and the community as the cause of the labour conflict at the company.<\/p>\n<p>A group of striking workers from A\u00e7ucareira de Xinavane vandalized the local police post, company infrastructure and village residences, demanding better salary conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Celso Correia said that any calculation of the impact of Wednesday\u2019s destruction and of the strike at the factory on national production was still to be made.<\/p>\n<p>Following the disturbances, the general commander of the Mozambican police, Bernardino Rafael, dismissed the commanders of the corporation in Maputo province, In\u00e1cio Dina, and in Manhi\u00e7a district, Jos\u00e9 Jofrisse.<\/p>\n<p>In a meeting with officials from the provincial police command in Maputo yesterday, Bernardino Rafael also announced the termination of duties of the head of the police post in Xinavane and the head of operations of the corporation in the district of Manhi\u00e7a.<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath of Wednesday\u2019s clashes in Xinavane, Rafael said, 27 people had been detained and would be brought to justice on suspicion of involvement in the destruction of public assets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cXinavane woke up quiet today, and we are working to ensure that what happened yesterday [Wednesday] does not happen again, so that the factory can get back to work,\u201d Rafael said.<\/p>\n<p>Rafael did not indicate the names of the officers who will occupy the positions left vacant.<\/p>\n<p>The Xinavane sugar company is 88% owned by the South African group Tongaat Hulett, and 12% by the Mozambican state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For More News And Analysis About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\">Mozambique<\/a> Follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique.
