Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>A total of 247,159 young Mozambicans signed up for military service between January and February this year, the Mozambican Defence Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

According to the statement, the military census figures achieved this year represented 123% of the projected target.<\/p>\n

\u201cCompared to the same period last year, there was a rise of around 25.1% concerning the target of 200,000 young men and women for this year, as 196,966 young men and women had been registered,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

The target this year was also to cover 200,000 who turn 18 and people over that age who had not registered in previous years, provided they were not over 35.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe success achieved by the ministry of defence in this process is due to the commitment of the Provincial Mobilisation and Recruitment Centres and the engagement of the youth in raising awareness about the need to have the military situation regularised,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s campaign was launched on 3 January and was held under the slogan \u201cMilitary Census, 25 years raising the civic-patriotic awareness of young people, for the benefit of National Defence\u201d.<\/p>\n
