Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Part of Cuamba town is inundated with floodwaters from the Muanda river in Niassa province, as a result of rain brought by Cyclone Gombe since Friday.<\/p>\n

Although the cyclone\u2019s strong winds have subsided, heavy rain continues to fall in parts of the centre and north of the country, swelling the Muanda river, which passes through Cuamba.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe river was already at levels far above its capacity and then overflowed, causing flooding and affecting the populations that live nearby,\u201d said Isac Filimone, technician at the National Directorate of Water Resources Management.<\/p>\n

The Licungo, Meluli and Ligonha basins are in the same situation, Filimone said, and are most likely to feel the effects of the rain, but others have also recorded an increase in runoff and, consequently, floods.<\/p>\n

\u201cBasically, the three basins I mentioned are on alert level, but others are also seeing floods, especially in low-lying and riverside areas,\u201d Filimone explained.<\/p>\n

Rainfall is starting to abate, but flow in the rivers is expected to remain high.<\/p>\n
