Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Four people disappeared in the L\u00fario river, in northern Mozambique, when strong currents caused the artisanal canoe in which they were travelling to capsize, authorities there have announced.<\/p>\n

The accident took place on Saturday in Namuno district, Cabo Delgado province. Subsequent searches for the bodies have so far proved fruitless.<\/p>\n

The four people belonged to the same family: two women, one of whom was pregnant, and two children.<\/p>\n

The family was trying to cross the river to participate in a funeral, but the flow and strength of the current, aggravated by the rainy season, capsized the canoe, made from a tree trunk.<\/p>\n

The vessel\u2019s owner managed to swim to the bank and raised the alarm.<\/p>\n

Capsizings in Mozambique\u2019s rivers are frequent during the rainy season (October to April), and authorities routinely urge people to avoid travelling in precarious vessels, especially on risky stretches of water.<\/p>\n
