Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>England manager Gareth Southgate has said he is unhappy some fans will not feel able to travel to Qatar for November\u2019s World Cup due to concerns over human rights issues in the country.<\/p>\n

Homosexuality is illegal in the Gulf state and there is also unease over women\u2019s rights, while Qatar has been criticised since being awarded the tournament hosting rights over the poor treatment of foreign construction workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are the issues that potentially threaten our fans when they travel \u2014 the rights of women and the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in particular,\u201d said Southgate.<\/p>\n

\u201cSadly, through discussions that I\u2019ve had, I don\u2019t think some of those communities are going to go and that\u2019s a great shame.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe stand for inclusivity as a team \u2014 that\u2019s been the big driver of a lot of the stances we\u2019ve taken in the last couple of years.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be horrible to think some of our fans feel they can\u2019t go because they feel threatened or they\u2019re worried about their safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

During qualifying for the tournament, which kicks off on November 21, players from Norway, Netherlands and Germany staged protests to highlight concerns over human rights issues in Qatar.<\/p>\n

Southgate believes his England players will also look to make their stance known on the matters, but they are yet to determine how best to do so.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe feel the World Cup is an opportunity to highlight some of these issues and we have a platform to be able to do that,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve also got to do that in a responsible way.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure that just wearing a T-shirt makes a difference. I don\u2019t totally know what we can do in every aspect to make a difference. We have to be realistic about what that might be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale will be sidelined for a few weeks after sustaining a hip injury during the midweek loss to Liverpool, with manager Mikel Arteta saying he would not feature for England in their upcoming matches.<\/p>\n

Ramsdale, who joined Arsenal in August for an initial fee of 24 million pounds, had started every Premier League game for the London club since he broke into the starting lineup and benched Bernd Leno.<\/p>\n

Ramsdale had been called up for England’s friendlies later this month against Switzerland and Ivory Coast. He made his England debut in November in a 10-0 win over San Marino.<\/p>\n

After Arsenal’s 1-0 Premier League win on Saturday, which Leno started, Arteta gave more information about Ramsdale’s injury, and confirmed he would not be fit enough for England.<\/p>\n

“He struggled for the final 60 minutes in the Liverpool match in midweek,” Arteta said. “He will not be able to play for England because of this injury.”<\/p>\n
