Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Around 66% of the Mozambican population does not have access to drinking water in the country, despite around 1,000 boreholes being drilled every year, the minister of public works said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Mozambique statistics show that we have about 66% of the population without any safe source of water,\u201d Carlos Mesquita, Mozambique\u2019s minister of public works, housing and water resources said.<\/p>\n

He was speaking in Maputo during a ceremony to celebrate World Water Day, which was marked yesterday.<\/p>\n

According to Mesquita, the availability of water in the 1,000 boreholes opened each year in the country is \u201climited\u201d due, amongst other reasons, to low flows, pollution caused by excessive use of agricultural fertilisers, disorderly settlements and prolonged droughts.<\/p>\n

He added that with the effect of climate change, there is \u201ca reduction in the availability of water\u201d in the country, and he suggested the \u201cconstruction of underground water capture infrastructures\u201d.<\/p>\n

In order to deal with the problem, recourse to \u201cdesalination, in regions where underground water is brackish,\u201d could be another alternative, Mesquita said.<\/p>\n
