Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Cyclone Gombe has caused 61 deaths in Mozambique, according to the updated balance sheet from the authorities, according to which there are over 480,000 people affected.<\/p>\n

The report from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) consulted by Lusa said that 53 deaths were caused by collapsed walls and the remainder by drowning, falling trees and electrocution, leaving the number of injured at 82.<\/p>\n

The cyclone, which hit central and northern Mozambique on 11 March, destroyed 95,500 homes and flooded another 9,551, as well as damaging 69 hospital units, 129 roads and 2,748 power poles.<\/p>\n

The storm also destroyed five bridges, 1,458 classrooms, affecting 143,904 pupils, 2,420 teachers and 469 schools.<\/p>\n

Gombe hit Mozambique three years after cyclones Idai and Kenneth hit the central and northern regions of the country in what was one of the heaviest rainy seasons in living memory.<\/p>\n

Since the start of the current rainy season in October, at least 134 people have died and over 760,000 have been affected by natural disasters in Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The country faces several storms each year during the cyclonic and rainy season, which runs from October to April.<\/p>\n
