Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The UN General Assembly on Thursday adopted a new non-binding resolution that demanded an \u201cimmediate\u201d halt to Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

At UN headquarters in New York, 140 countries voted in favor, 38 abstained and five voted against the measure, with applause ringing out afterwards.<\/p>\n

The vote came after the adoption of a similar non-binding resolution on March 2 that demanded Russia immediately cease its use of force \u2014 a vote that was approved by 141 countries.<\/p>\n

Draft resolution A\/ES-11\/L.2 condemning Russia\u2019s violations of international humanitarian and human rights law in #Ukraine ?? overwhelmingly passes in the @UN General Assembly:<\/p>\n

38 abstentions<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Ukraine put forward the new resolution, originally prepared by France and Mexico, at an emergency session of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n

A competing text by South Africa, which never mentioned Russia by name, received only 50 votes for, 67 against and 36 abstentions, and was therefore not adopted.<\/p>\n

The approved resolution specifically implicates Moscow and \u201cdemands an immediate cessation of the hostilities by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, in particular of any attacks against civilians and civilian objects.\u201d<\/p>\n

The United States ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, has described the resolution as \u201cbuilding\u201d on the March 2 vote.<\/p>\n

She said it \u201cmakes that appeal to the one person with the ability to stop the violence. And that\u2019s Vladimir Putin.\u201d<\/p>\n

A total of 38 countries including Mozambique abstained. Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Mali, Namibia, South Africa, Sudan, Togo, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania and Zimbabwe also abstained from voting<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Russia submitted a resolution to the UN Security Council on the \u201chumanitarian situation\u201d in Ukraine \u2014 but it was not adopted.<\/p>\n
