Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Japanese government announced on Thursday a grant of 5.2 million US dollars which, according to a press release from the Japanese embassy, is intended \u201cto support Mozambique on its path to sustainable development, as well as the humanitarian response to the crisis in the north of the country\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Japanese aid will be implemented through various international organisations, including United Nations agencies, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the International Federation of Red Cross Societies (IFRC).<\/p>\n

The announcement was made at a ceremony in Maputo attended by, among others, the Director for the Asia-Pacific Region in the Mozambican Foreign Ministry. Ismael Valigy, and the Japanese ambassador, Kimura Hajime.<\/p>\n

According to the press release, the Japanese aid \u201cwill allow the international organisations selected to strengthen and increase their support to the Mozambican government in matters of sustainable development and the humanitarian response for internally displaced people and their host communities affected by the crisis in northern Mozambique\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cMozambique faces security problems in Cabo Delgado province, which have caused many losses\u201d, said Ambassador Hajime. \u201cCombatting insecurity and conflict is essential for the future economic development of Mozambique\u201d.<\/p>\n

Japan had thus decided to grant 4.9 million dollars to assist displaced people and the host communities in the northern provinces.<\/p>\n

A further 300,000 dollars of the grant will go towards \u201cpromoting responsible business conduct in Mozambique, with particular stress on the promotion of due diligence in matters of human rights in global supply chains, and in levering the Guiding Principles of the United Nations on Business and Human Rights\u201d, the ambassador added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Japanese contribution is very important and opportune for many people with terrible humanitarian needs\u201d, said the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system in Mozambique, Myrta Kaulard. \u201cI thank the Japanese government for its generous contribution for a better future for all\u201d.<\/p>\n
