Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>After a recent government reshuffle, Mozambique joins \u201ca group of only 14 countries that have achieved gender parity at this [Council of Ministers] level,\u201d the UN has stated.<\/p>\n

The personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Mozambique and the UN Resident Coordinator, in a statement released this Saturday (26-03), praised the Mozambican government for achieving gender parity in the Council of Ministers for the first time.<\/p>\n

The number of men and women reached equilibrium after President Filipe Nyusi\u2019s March reshuffle. There are now 11 women and 11 men \u2013 including the prime minister \u2013 holding ministerial posts in the Mozambican government.<\/p>\n

\u201cAchieving gender parity in the Council of Ministers is a historic milestone,\u201d said the UN, adding that it is \u201ca reflection of the broader work to promote equality\u201d and the emancipation of women.<\/p>\n

Globally, only a fifth of ministerial positions are held by women, underlined Mirko Manzoni, personal representative of Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, and Myrta Kaulard, resident coordinator.<\/p>\n

Mozambique joins \u201ca group of only 14 countries that have achieved gender parity at this level and is the third country in Africa to have 50% or more women in ministerial positions\u201d.<\/p>\n

The two officials also recall that Filipe Nyusi promised gender parity on Mozambican Women\u2019s Day in 2021, a holiday celebrated on April 7.<\/p>\n
