Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The governments of Mozambique and Zimbabwe on Monday in Maputo signed an agreement and two memorandums of understanding in the areas of education, science and technology, as well as in the field of air rescue, as part of strengthening bilateral cooperation.<\/p>\n

The understandings were initialled as part of the state visit that the president of Zimbabwe, Emerson Mnangagwa, is making to Mozambique at the invitation of his Mozambican counterpart, Filipe Nyusi.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe note with satisfaction that Mozambique and Zimbabwe have excellent relations based on the common history of their national liberation struggle, cultural and linguistic ties between the two countries and peoples and geographical proximity,\u201d said Mozambique\u2019s minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Veronica Macamo, at the press conference following the meeting between the countries\u2019 delegations.<\/p>\n

The agreements reached today also provide that Maputo and Harare will hold official meetings every year, with the transformation of the bilateral joint commission into a binational commission, Macamo added.<\/p>\n

The two countries, she said, also decided that Mozambique would increase the amount of electricity it sells to Zimbabwe, given the growing energy needs of that country and the availability of the resource on the Mozambican side.<\/p>\n

The meeting also served to analyse cooperation in the area of defence and security, and a positive assessment was made of Zimbabwe\u2019s contribution to the fight against \u201cterrorism,\u201d in the province of Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, added the head of Mozambican diplomacy.<\/p>\n

Macamo said that the two countries were also pleased with the progress that had been made in cooperation in the political and diplomatic areas, transport and communications, water resources, mineral resources, public works and housing.<\/p>\n

As part of his state visit to Mozambique, Emerson Mnangagwa is visiting the Mozambican parliament on Tuesday and has symbolically received the key to the city of Maputo.<\/p>\n

The Zimbabwean president lived several years in Mozambique, when part of the guerrilla leadership of the Zimbabwe African National Union \u2013 Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), the current ruling party in Zimbabwe, fought against the British colonial regime until the country gained independence in 1980.<\/p>\n
