Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday in Maputo urged the Police Science Academy (ACIPOL) to update its curriculum, lecturing staff and management methods, and thus begin the training of police investigators so that they can solve cases dealing with threats such as terrorism and kidnappings.<\/p>\n

Addressing the closing ceremony of an ACIPOL graduation course, Nyusi said it made no sense to arrest 50 or 100 people suspected of involvement in terrorism, but who, when interrogated, hardly say anything.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot catch between 50 and 100 suspects and the answer we get is always the same, they are not saying anything. Within a sample of 100 people, at least four or five will say something, therefore we want you to improve the investigation methods,\u201d Nyusi stressed.<\/p>\n

The new threats, Nyusi said, also pose the need to include into ACIPOL\u2019s mission and vision such matters as traffic accidents, abductions, kidnappings and terrorism. They demand very strong measures and specific techniques within the short, medium and long term.<\/p>\n

\u201cExploring the partnerships, ACIPOL has to start training for traffic officers and traffic controllers who will be up to dealing with the threat,\u201d Nyusi indicated, emphasizing that they must be corruption free, knowledgeable, specialised and modern.<\/p>\n

Nyusi said that the academy must train officers with a professional mindset who will be proud of the mission they are going to fulfill.<\/p>\n

\u201cA traffic officer proud of his mission will hardly ask for a soft drink when he is on the street\u201d (in the Mozambican police \u201ca soft drink\u201d is a euphemism for a bribe), said the President. Likewise at schools: \u201cWhen teachers are driven by values such as integrity and responsibility pupils will hardly approach them to offer money in exchange for passing exams,\u201d Nyusi stressed.<\/p>\n

Nyusi also urged the Ministry of the Interior and the Police General Command to thoroughly select and allocate the newly trained officers, in order to take full advantage of their capacities, for the benefit of the citizens. He expects from the graduates preparedness, steadfastness, proactivity and effectiveness.<\/p>\n
