Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Mozambican Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MITESS) said today that it was committed to the legalisation of Mozambican agricultural workers in South Africa, estimating the number of nationals affected at about 6,000.<\/p>\n

The Mozambique\u2019s Labour Administration delegate in South Africa, Jo\u00e3o Almeida, told state-owned broadcaster Radio Mozambique that the Mozambican labour authorities are working with the labour recruitment agencies to deliver the Mozambicans working in agriculture there from the unregulated situation in which they find themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe found, a priori, that they have problems with documents, and that they don\u2019t have a BI [Identity Card] or a passport,\u201d Almeida advanced.<\/p>\n

The regularisation of the situation \u201cwill pick up speed\u201d after Easter, he added.<\/p>\n

The official pointed out that the number of Mozambicans living and working on South African farms illegally represents two thirds of a total of about 9,000 employed in the sector in the neighbouring country.<\/p>\n

In addition to agriculture, thousands of Mozambicans work in the mining sector in South Africa, a country with one of the largest economies on the continent, and many more in informal trade.<\/p>\n

Abuse of Mozambicans working illegally in South Africa, such as exploitation, unpaid work and arbitrary deportations, have been reported several times.<\/p>\n

The repatriation of undocumented workers is often accomplished in connivance with employers, who take advantage of the situation to avoid paying wages.<\/p>\n
