Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Women in the media are speaking out on Mozambican Journalists\u2019 Day about the various challenges and sexual harassment they face.<\/p>\n

\u201cSexual harassment is something that unfortunately stains our profession,\u201d says Cl\u00e9usia Chirindza, a journalist with five years\u2019 experience, currently working for Media4 Development.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn some newsrooms, journalists are not properly valued, especially for those who are starting their careers,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

Another young journalist, Ol\u00edvia Mapute of Televis\u00e3o Miramar, says she is one of the \u201cfew women journalists\u201d reporting on crime and \u201cproud\u201d to be challenging the status quo.<\/p>\n

According to Na\u00e9rcia Langa, who has been working in the field for 10 years and who is a member of the Di\u00e1rio de Mo\u00e7ambique newspaper, there have been great advances in communication, \u201chowever several challenges still persist \u2013 the main one being access to information sources\u201d.<\/p>\n

Like Ms Chirindza, Midia Lab journalist C\u00e1tia Mangue says a culture of sexism and sexual harassment plagues many newsrooms. She also says being a mother and wife unfairly limits women\u2019s career progression, and she cites the challenges of sourcing information as a tricky aspect of day-to-day work.<\/p>\n
