Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The African Union on Saturday reiterated its confidence in senior Mozambican diplomat, Francisco Madeira, who is head of the AU mission to Somalia.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Somali Prime Minister Hussein Roble expelled Madeira, giving him 48 hours to leave the country. Roble accused him of actions contrary to his position as the special representative of the AU Chairperson in Somalia, but did not specify these acts.<\/p>\n

A few hours later, Somali President Mohamed Farmaajo overturned Roble\u2019s order. \u201cThere is no authentication by the President of the Republic in regard of acts against Ambassador Madeira,\u201d Farmaajo said, adding that Somalia\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had not submitted reports indicating that Madeira somehow opposed the independence of the country.<\/p>\n

The current AU chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, reaffirmed his \u201ctrust and confidence\u201d in Madeira as his Special Representative.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Chairperson reiterated the African Union\u2019s continued commitment to support the sisterly nation of the Federal Republic of Somalia in its pursuant to restore lasting peace, security and stability,\u201d a statement from the AU.<\/p>\n

Farmaajo instructed the Foreign Ministry to inform the AU Commission that the decision to expel Madeira was not legitimate, since Roble\u2019s office did not have that power.<\/p>\n

\u201cMadeira and other ambassadors in Somalia present their credentials to the President of the Republic who is the guardian of the independence of the country\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n
