Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) will deploy a group of inspectors to detect and fight cases of corruption involving the Traffic Police (PT), Commander General of the PRM, Bernardino Rafael, has announced.<\/p>\n

According to Bernardino Rafael, quoted today by the daily newspaper \u2018Not\u00edcias\u2019, the inspectors will carry out patrols to stop PT agents extorting drivers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will deploy teams of inspectors to police all agents who commit these irregularities. The offenders will be removed and held criminally responsible\u201d, he declared.<\/p>\n

The PRM, he continued, also wants to combat the broadening involvement of various branches of the corporation in traffic inspection, so that this work is the exclusive responsibility of one specialised unit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are many entities playing the same role and in different places,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Bernardino Rafael urged traffic police agents to stop \u201cinconveniencing drivers\u201d. \u201cDon\u2019t steal time and slow down the traffic,\u201d he urged, exhorting members of the corporation to \u201cmake people\u2019s lives easier\u201d by simplifying inspection procedures.<\/p>\n

The PRM commander-general also criticised the illegal appropriation of drivers\u2019 personal documents by traffic agents as a form of psychological coercion to pay bribes.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican Traffic Police [PT \u2013 Policia de Transito] has already been indicated by several reports as one of the most corrupt institutions in the Mozambican state. It is even accused of being among the causes of road accidents in the country, by allowing bad driving to persist in exchange for bribes.<\/p>\n
